13-Year-Old Surfer Suffers Shark Bite at Port Macquarie This Morning

A 13-year-old boy is in a stable condition after being bitten by a shark while surfing at Port Macquarie this morning.
Lifeguards say a teenage boy has been bitten on the ankle and finger by a shark at Town Beach, Port Macquarie early this morning - he’s been taken to Hospital in a stable condition. He was surfing Town Beach around 6am when the bite occurred, coming from a small shark, according to Surflifesaving NSW. He suffered injuries to his upper leg, foot, and finger.
Lifeguard James Turnham told Port Macquarie News the attack happened in the centre of the beach:
"He wasn't that far out. The waves are only breaking about 30-40 metres out this morning...It has made a mess of his ankle and there was a small bite to his finger. It wasn't life threatening. He was in a bit of shock."
It's reported that the surfer was smiling and in good spirits when he was taken to hospital by an ambulance.
The beach has been closed for the day.
This incident comes after a woman was attacked back in August at nearby Shelly Beach, south of Town Beach in the Port Macquarie region.
2020 has seen a significant jump in fatal shark incidents. There have been four fatal shark attacks suffered by surfers on the Australian coast since June 2020, three of those between Coffs Harbour and the Gold Coast.
